While the festival also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over Buffalo Demon Mahishasura. Thus this day is also significant as the day marks as the victory of good over evil. It is being basically believed that in some regions, Goddess Kali appeared on this day from the forehead of Mother Durga and annihilated Chanda, Munda, and Rakthabija (the three demons who were associate of Mahishasura).
