Finally, the much-awaited news or updates over Mega Rafale deal is here. India will ink the deal with France on the coming Friday i.e. on 23 September 2016. The deal will be done with France and will cover a supply of 36 Rafale fighter jets to India. This will be an energetic and most needed step towards the security steps of India. The deal will also make India strengthen its air combat power.
Currently, India is having only 33 fighter squadrons while at least 42 are needed to defence against countries like China and Pakistan. On Wednesday Defence Ministry sourced a statement for the inter-governmental agreement (IGA) with France after the requisite clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security which comes under the hold of PM Narendra Modi.
The IGA and related commercial protocols will be inked on papers on Friday in presence of Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar along with his French language converter Jean-Yves Le Drian.
Complete Deal of 36 Twin-engine Rafales along with weapons and proper supplies and logistics will cost India around 7.8 billion euros (over Rs 59,000 Crore), as earlier said by TOI. The First omni-role Rafale which holds a capacity to deliver nuclear weapons will be added in Indian security in next three years. A source revealed that the complete order of 36 jets will get completed in 66 months and 15% of the deal amount i.e. Rs. 9,000 crore will be paid as first installment.
If we make calculations of the number of Rafale fighter jets and the amount of deal, a single jet will cost around Rs. 1,640 crore. We cannot compare different fighter jets as every jet conprises of its speciality of attacking. India can also buy two-three Russian heavy-weight Sukhoi-30MKIs or can also buy 5-6 indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft for every Rafale but India is making the deal with France. A single Tejas posses an attack range of 400 km and weapon carrying capacity of 2.5 tonnes while a Rafale can go up to 1,650 km as attacking range and can have a weapon load upto 9.3-tonne.
