‘International Day For The Eradication of Poverty’ On 17 October: Know The Significance & Importance Of This Day!


Today is one of the most remarkable day in the history of UN. As today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which is celebrated every year on 17t October throughout the world.

While the day was officially recognized by the United Nations, but the first commemoration of the event was taken place in Paris, France, in 1987. On this remarking day back to 1987 around 100,000 people gathered on the Human Right and Liberties Plaza at the Trocadero to honour victims of the Poverty, Hunger, Violence, and fear. While this remaking day was called by Joseph Wresinki who was the founder of the International Movement ATD fourth World.

eradication-of-povertyThe day is quite special as on this day one of the major aims is to make the voice of the poor and poverty stricken people get heard and at this end, commemoration often includes testimonies from people living in all this poverty, to describe their sufferings, experience or it is being asked by those who knows this experience ever in their life.

The United Nations most Sustainable Development Goal is to “end poverty in all its forms and dimensions from everywhere” research recognizes that poverty results not only from the lack of just one thing but from many different interrelated factors that affect the lives of people living in poverty.

This simply means we must have to go beyond explaining or pointing poverty merely as the lack of income or what is necessary for material well-being such as food, housing, land, and other assets in order to fully understand poverty in its multiple dimensions.
