According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the daily folic acid supplements cut the risk of defects in neutral tube (in an embryo), by the recommendation of new guidelines of reaffirm prenatal.  By consuming an ample amount of this vitamin, women can lower the risk of birth defects.

As during the stage of early pregnancy, folic acid helps to lower the risk of having a child with birth defect. There are many kind of defects includes in neural tube defects like defect in baby’s brain, spine or in baby’s spine cord, it generally happen during the first month of the pregnancy at the stage when baby’s part begin to made. The defects also include spina bifida and anencephaly, these two defect are most common in neural tube defects.

Spina bifida is a condition when the fetal spinal column remains disclose or doesn’t completely close while in the second most common defect anencephaly, the skull and the brain of the baby doesn’t develop.

The experts have already released the guideline in the year of 2009, in which experts suggest pregnant women to consume supplements which contains folic acid between the amount of 400 micrograms to 800 micrograms as it will help to reduce the risk of fatal birth defects.

Neural tube defect can even causes death in some extremely rare cases because spinal cord or brain and skull doesn’t develop due to the fatal birth defect. In some cases these neural defect occurs before women got to know about their pregnancy. The experts advised that it would be great if pregnant woman consume the folic acid supplements at her first month of pregnancy and carried it on during first three months of her pregnancy.

You can find folic acid in many different vegetables and fruits in the form of vitamin B. Pregnant Women can consume folic acid adding these easily available fruits and vegetables like spinach, collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, romaine lettuce, broccoli, oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, avocado, carrots, cauliflower etc.

The Task Force member Doctor Alex Kemper  in task force news release said, “The task force found convincing evidence that the risk of neural tube defects can be reduced when women take a daily folic acid supplement of 400 to 800 micrograms,” He added, “These supplements can be taken as a daily multivitamin, prenatal vitamin or single tablet that has the recommended amount of folic acid.”
