Sri Lanka had one of the best and complete bowling attacks in limited over cricket. They had the best in the spin in the form of Muttiah Muralitharan and not to forget Lasith Malinga with his toe crunching Yorkers.
However today Sri Lankan bowling attack is sadly depleted of its world-class bowlers. Nuwan Kulasekara showed some promise but withered away the gains in less than a year since he helped his home side win the World T20 cricket and does not figure in the team.
Sachithra Senanayake’s changed action has made him less effective. Lasith Malinga is dogged by injuries and not fully fit. The selector’s reluctance to play four specialist bowlers have only compounded the home side’s woes.
Things are not well in their opposition team also. Pakistan has been hit by its high-profile retirements, but this does not seem to have affected them in Dambulla. Their bowlers struck with regularity and prevented Sri Lanka from erecting a respectable score.
Pakistan wins the toss and elects to bat first: The start of the game delayed by a wet outfield.
The Playing XI as below:
Sri Lanka: NLTC Perera, SS Pathirana, Thirimanne, WU Tharanga, Perera, TM Dilshan, LD Chandimal, Mathews, TAM Siriwardana, Malinga and N Pradeep.
Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam, Azhar Ali, Ahmed Shehzad, Sarfraz Ahmed, Anwar Ali, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Rizwan, Yasir Shah, Rahat Ali and Mohammad Irfan.
The Pakistan top order is young and inexperienced, just like Sri Lanka. However, they have been well supported by experience players like Shoaib Malik at No. 5 and Sarfraz Ahmed lower down.

Angelo Mathews will have a lot of pondering to do before he can turn the Sri Lanka series around. Could a specialist seamer be more useful than an allrounder? Should Sachithra Senanayake replace the more expensive Seekkuge Prasanna?

Dinesh Chandimal has been rotated almost everywhere in this order. In the last few matches, he has carried his bat till the fag end of the match and hence should be batting higher up in the order. He seems to have regained his form, and his leg side swipes are working once again.
Shri Lanka will not tinker with their batting order much, but the bowling attack could get a facelift. One can expect to see Senanayake back while Thisara’s place in the side goes under the scanner.
Pakistan in all probability will play the same side.
Pitch and conditions
There has been a forecast for light rains in the afternoon around Kandy. The pitch has a tendency to be seam friendly under lights.
