Today in Sea Island, Georgia, US Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III announced three of his Vice-Captains for the US team participating in the 2016 Ryder Cup.  Those well known names included:  Steve Stricker, Tigers Woods and Jim Furyk.  This year the Ryder Cup will be held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota and is taking place September 27-October 2.

Love had chosen Tom Lehman as Vice Captain upon being appointed as Ryder Cup Captain.  Lehman, a Minnesota native, had been the 2006 U.S. Captain and was a member of three other Ryder Cup Teams.  The 5th appointment has yet to be selected.

Furyk has played in 9 Ryder Cups and been a member of the winning teams of 2008 and 1999.  His 9 Ryders Cups is second only to Phil Mickelson’s total of 10 Ryder Cup competitions.

Upon being selected, Furyk was quoted as saying, ““I am honored to be named a Vice Captain for the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup Team. The Ryder Cup is in my DNA and I love everything about this event, the enormity of the stage, the passion, the competition, and the pressure. I look forward to being part of the team as we strive to win back the Ryder Cup on U.S. soil.”

Steve Stricker was also nominated as a Vice Captain in 2014.  He’s been a member of Team USA during the 2008, 2010 and 2012 competitions.  Stricker’s record includes 12 PGA Tour wins, as well as five Presidents Cups. According to Stricker, “I think about the Ryder Cup all the time. There is nothing quite like it in sports. I am ready to roll up my sleeves, get started and get up to Hazeltine.”

This will be a first for Tiger Woods –  His first appointment as Vice Captain.  With 7 Team USA Ryder Cups under his belt, Woods will bring a strong and diverse background to the team.  Woods has been on the 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2012 teams.

With notification of his appointment, Woods had this to say, “‘I’d like to thank Davis for his confidence in me and for my selection as a Ryder Cup Vice Captain. This is something I want to do,’ said Woods. ‘I will continue to do whatever I can to help win the Cup back. Once I’m fully healthy, I’d like to try to make the team too, but either way, I’m very excited to work with Davis, the other Vice Captains and the players to get a U.S. victory.'”

Love will have an option to name replacements for these individuals in the event that any Vice Captains either qualify for or are named to the U.S. Ryder Cup Team.
